Dr Wilhelm Heinrich Schuessler (1821-1898) was a German physician based in Oldenburg who became fascinated by the mineral content of the human body. After studying the ash left behind from human tissue, he identified twelve inorganic salts he believed were vital to healthy cells, and in 1873 he published his findings. He called his approach biochemic, and he prepared each salt in a tiny, finely triturated form so it could be taken comfortably by people of every age.
